“Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rests the cornerstones of freedom, democracy, and sustainable human development.”

— Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary-General

Our kids deserve better!

Whatever your political affiliation, I am guessing you’ll agree. We need greater investment in public education, allowing for more space, more resources, and more learning support.

I’m seeking election as a BGSD Trustee on October 20, so I may serve the diverse needs of the students, families, and communities of the Black Gold School Division. Let’s set our kids up for success!

“Success. That’s what I hope every child will find at school and in life: the achievement of their hopes and dreams, whatever they may be.

Building community, meeting academic goals, overcoming personal challenges, or uncovering their talents—there are as many definitions of student success as there are students.

At the most basic level, what all children need from adults, and the systems we have built, is our unwavering support and commitment to helping them reach their full potential.”

— Victoria Holloway, BGSD Trustee Candidate

What Gets Me Fired Up?

Funding

Student success is hampered by inadequate funding. As a Trustee, I’ll help shape the Division budget, but I’ll also advocate to the government for investment in public education.

Alberta’s education system is the lowest funded in Canada, and our kids are paying the price. Classroom sizes are growing, and Educational Assistant support is underfunded. As a result, teachers have to devote more energy to classroom management and have less time for individual connection.

This situation is untenable. Our kids are eager to learn. Teachers and staff are gifted and passionate about what they do, but they can’t work miracles. We need to demand more.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Each BGSD student brings a unique combination of gifts, experiences, perspectives, and identities to school. Every one of them deserves to be honoured, equitably supported, and included in the full spectrum of education.

I am committed to being a vocal advocate for all students, and particularly those from marginalized communities. Our Board and our schools’ staff must reflect the diversity of our area so students and families know their needs are being represented.

As a member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, regardless of who you vote for in this election, I encourage you to ensure the Board is representative of our diverse communities, and that you reach out to it with your concerns about DEI.

Mental Health

I have been a passionate advocate for mental health for decades. As a mum and as someone invested in public education, childhood mental health is a special interest.

Kids can often lack the language or insight necessary to share their struggles. Schools and their staff provide nurturing environments that have protective properties; they also present the opportunity to observe students, open discussion, and connect students and families to support.

As a Trustee, I hope to focus attention on childhood mental health. Early interventions improve lifelong outcomes.

What Do I Offer?

Passion

The future of our society depends on an educated populace with the skills to think critically, question decision-makers, and advocate for change. Those skills are born in schools.

For years, I have watched teachers, administrators, and staff work tirelessly to find creative solutions to problems wrought by underfunding. It is tireless, sometimes thankless work, and recently I’ve witnessed outward signs of hopelessness and defeat. I could scream in frustration, but I’m choosing to act instead.

BGSD staff—and their colleagues across the province—have a heart for service and a love for our children. Their burden, and its impact on our kids, is unacceptable. Together, we can be a voice for change.

Perspective

As an active participant in my kids’ education, I’m in the thick of it, just like many of you. I’m watching in real-time with a mind to the system’s successes and failures.

For the past two years, I have been a School Council Executive, most recently as Vice-Chair. In that time, I’ve listened to family concerns, joined in advocating for educational reform through the Alberta School Councils’ Association, and engaged with the BGSD Board of Trustees at various meetings and events.

My insights motivate me, and they ensure I will be an effective advocate for students and families in our Division.

Dedication

While I have a background in post-secondary student service and mental health promotion, I am currently taking a leave from my freelance editorial work to pursue this challenge.

I’m privileged to have dedicated time to focus on Board business, connect with my fellow BGSD residents about their concerns, and collaborate with other Trustees in developing Division goals and advocacy agendas.

Sound off!

A trustee is the voice of their community. What areas of public education matter to you? What successes and opportunities for development do you see for our students? What would you like the Board to prioritize? Let me know!
